Peace silk (Ahimsa silk) enables the completion of the metamorphosis of the silkworm into a butterfly, the cocoon (with the silk) is processed only after hatching. In the conventional extraction of silk, countless silk moths are killed, scalded alive while in the cocoon with hot water. This conventional process enables faster production of silk. For every one meter of conventional silk about 3,000-15,000 silkworms die.
With Ahimsa silk, silkworm breeding is under natural conditions. Trees in which the silkworms grow are not treated with fungicides, insecticides or genetic sprays. To protect the caterpillars from birds, a thin net is stretched over the trees. Once the caterpillars have spun their cocoons, they are kept in a sheltered place until they hatch. Although this slows down production, it enables ethical and non-violent production of silk fibers.
